The History of the USA

I was very happy to be able to be a speaker at Liberty Institute’s recent “History of the USA” seminar last night. When you’re all caught up in language instruction sometimes it’s easy to forget that the way we talk has a lot to do with what we talk about. And of course, America has been in the news a lot recently!

I was very happy to be able to provide some context for some of the things that go into “an American mentality”, which will especially help those who are new to the country get a feel for how and why our people make the decisions they do.

Stay tuned for our next free seminar coming in January!

Cheers!,

The Story of Learning in the US

It’s easy to forget that different countries have different approaches towards education. Coming up on Monday, November 7th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, Liberty Institute is hosting a seminar about what the American education system is all about.

Back to school!

Are you a parent, interested in helping your student succeed? Are you a student yourself, trying to navigate a new system? One way or another, Monday’s event is sure to be a great way to connect with others in the community who have the same kinds of questions you do, and learn a bit in the process.

We hope to see you there!,

A Pleasure to Meet You! Muito Prazer!

Classes have started at Liberty Institute! Classes in English went great, and our students are hungry to learn. That’s what we like to hear!

At the same time, Marina (my wife) and I are enrolled in a course called “Elementary Portuguese 1”. We had a blast — drinking guarana, playing a little bit of futebol, and learning how to introduce ourselves and spell our sobrenomes.

There has been lots of buzz about our Portuguese for Kids course too — why not bring the kids so they can practice their portugues, while Mom and Dad work on their English.

It’s not too late to join up for this academic term! Give us a call!

Tchau!,

Our Mission and Mantra

I’m burning the midnight oil here at Liberty Institute. Classes start in less than two weeks and there are so many things left to do. One of the most important things a company can do is establish what its mission is. Why do we exist? To which values do we commit?

As I’ve said before, working at Liberty Institute is a dream come true — taking these first steps is an exercise in pure creation. Of course I come to this venture with years of experience, and an entire history of valuable lessons that have impacted me in one way or another… but a mission statement is not an essay; it’s a simple distillation of everything we stand for. This is ours:

“To provide our students with world-class learning experiences, treating each student as a whole person, addressing each student’s unique needs through high-quality, research-driven pedagogy and real-world applications.”

This is the academic experience we strive toward. Our students are not juststudents. They’re individuals — parents, children, learners with histories of things that have worked and things that haven’t… people with futures that are just as important as their pasts. They come from everywhere, and we want to give those students the kind of education that they’ll be proud of, anywhere they go.

At Liberty Institute, our mantra is empowering world citizens.

In addition to our English courses, I’m happy to announce that we’ll also be starting a Portuguese language class starting on October 10th, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Join up and take class with me so that podemos falar português em conjunto.

Vejo você lá!

Boa noite!,

The Liberty Family is Growing

I have to say, I’m pretty excited. The plan for tomorrow is to meet our first group of student recruiters. Recruiters play such an important role in helping reach out to the community and connect the students out there with the services that are right for them… and if you’re like me, then you know there’s a student, hungry to learn, inside each of us.

In my years as an educator, one thing I’ve learned has turned into a sort of mantra that I repeat to myself from time to time:

“Reach to teach each, learn to rise above, for to teach is to learn, and to learn is to love.”

I can’t wait to meet our first recruiters tomorrow and start reaching!

Time for Class!

Cheers,

A new way to Live, Love and LEARN in Orlando

I am so excited to announce that as of September 15th, 2016, Liberty Institute Orlando is open for business!

It’s been a longtime dream of mine to open a school, and I’m proud to say that this week that dream finally came true. I’ve joined one of the best working teams I’ve ever been a part of, in order to help build a school that’s going to change the face of English language instruction, not to mention instruction in general!

There’s much left for us to do, but as each day brings new challenges, new opportunities arise. I’ll be using this blog space to talk about the goings-on at Liberty, including our student-first philosophy of instruction, our high-tech teaching gadgets, the types of courses we offer and more. Along the way, I’ll be providing a window into the minds of a team of dedicated educators living in a ‘perfect sandbox’ of opportunity.

I’ll be using this space to share Liberty’s story, as well as to put that story in the greater context of education today. I’ll be sharing our exciting news, developments as we build the absolute best learning experience we can, and sharing funny stories too (like that time our CEO caught my YouTube history full of Quantum Mechanics lectures from MIT… I can’t help it… I’m a NERD!).

I hope you join our blog and follow along on this wild adventure!

Oh and did I forget to mention. Liberty Institute is HIRING! Please send me your resumes, future teachers and recruiters! I can’t wait to welcome you to the family.

Cheers,
Joseph
